How to make a tie top curtain

When I tried to buy curtains for our new home, I could not find the right type of curtain, the right material or the right size. So that is why I ended up making my own curtains!

There are so many different curtain types (pleated, eyelet, tie top, and many more) that I did not even know that they existed before trying to make one.

Tie top curtains

I am sharing how I have made three different type of curtains in a simple and straightforward way that any beginner sewer (like me) can do! On this post, I will share how I made tie top curtains using a natural fabric. You can have a look at my other posts on how to make a pleated curtain and a tab-top curtain.

You will need fabric, scissor, sewing machine, thread and measuring tape.

1- First cut your curtain fabric to the size you want (measure your window height and width) it is always good to multiply the window width with 1.5 or 2 when deciding on the width of curtain. For the height, I suggest measuring from where you want the curtain to start from as it will be hanging from tie tops (e.g. 10 cm above the window) until where it should end (e.g. 20 cm below the window). The curtain should cover the window and under it to avoid drafts but should not cover the radiator  if there is one underneath. Once you measured the length you want the curtain to cover, you need to add to the total an approximately extra 2 inch for the top and 1 inch for the bottom of the fabric that we will fold. Likewise, for the width of the fabric add one inch for both sides as you will be folding the fabric so that the edges are nice and smooth.

2- We also need to cut fabric for ties. I have decided the width of each tie to be 3 cm. You need to cut a fabric with a width twice this as we will be folding it in half. The length of the tie depends on how high the curtain rack is. I would suggest measuring. Mine is 25 cm. You should add an additional 2 cm to this for taking into account sewing to the main curtain and folding of edges.

To decide, how many ties you will need, you need to first determine the space between each tie. I have decided to place the ties at around every 30 cm along the top of the curtain. And make sure to have one at each ends so that the corners are not hanging down. 

For each curtain piece, I will have 5 ties. As each tie is comprised of two fabrics. I have cut 10 fabrics with 6cm with and 27 length for each curtain piece. So in total 20 pieces for the whole curtain.

3- Once you cut the tie fabrics, fold them in half widthwise and sew edges to each other. Also sew edges on the other ends.

4- For preparing the main curtain fabric, fold your fabric width-wise and cut in half so that you have your two curtain pieces. 

Fold left and right side of the curtain fabric by one inch and sew for clean edges. Like wise fold bottom by 1 inch and sew. For the top edge, fold by 1 inch and fold it by 1 inch again so that it is folded twice to make it stronger. Sew again the edges.

5- Now, you can pin the ties 1 cm below the top edge of the curtain fabric and sew. And repeat this with equal space between each the tie.

The fabric I used is Field Marks Beachwood linen fabric from Seasalt Cornwall.

BİYE BAĞLAMALI RUSTİK PERDE

İngilizce'de adı tie-top diye geçen bu perde tipinin türkçesini 2013'te basılmış El Sanatları Teknolojisi kitabının içinde bulabildim ve huzurlarınızda biye bağlamalı rustik perde!

Yeni evimiz için perde almaya çalıştığımda doğru perde türünü, doğru malzemeyi ve doğru boyutu bulamadım. İşte bu yüzden kendi perdelerimi yapmaya karar verdim. Açıkçası bu kadar çok farklı perde türü olduğunu (pileli, metal halkalı, kumaş halkalı ve dahası), perde dikmeye karar verince öğrendim.

Basit bir şekilde nasıl üç farklı perde türü yaptığımı paylaştım blogumda. Bu yazıda doğal bir kumaş kullanarak biye bağlamalı rustik perde yapımını anlatıyorum. Pileli ve kumaş halkalı rustik perdeleri nasıl yaptığımı diğer yazılarımda görebilirsiniz.

Gereken malzemeler: Kumaş, makas, dikiş makinesi, iğne, iplik ve mezura.

1- Öncelikle perde kumaşınızı istediğimiz ölçülerde keselim (pencere yüksekliğini ve genişliğini ölçelim) perde genişliğine karar verirken pencere genişliğini 1,5 veya 2 ile çarpmanızı öneririm. Yükseklik için, perdenin başlayacağı noktadan (örneğin ğencerenin 10 cm yukarısından) biteceği yere kadar (örneğin pencerenin 20 cm altına) ölçelim. Perde, ısı kaybını önlemek için pencereyi ve altını örtmeli ve eğer pencerenin altında radyatör var ise onu kapatmamalıdır. Perdenin örtmesini istediğimiz uzunluğu ölçtükten sonra, kumaşın katlayacağımız üst kenarı için yaklaşık 6 cm ve alt kenar için yaklaşık 3 cm ekleyelim. Aynı şekilde, kumaşın katlayacağımız her iki yan kenarı için perde genişliği ölçülerine 3 cm ekleyelim. Kumaş kenarlarını katlayarak güzel bir görünüm elde etmeyi amaçlıyoruz.

2- Biyeler için de kumaş keselim. Ben perdem için her bir biyenin genişliğinin 3 cm olmasına karar verdim. Siz de istediğiniz kalınlığa göre bu ölçüye karar verebilirsiniz. Biye kumaşını ikiye katlayacağımız için karar verdiğimiz biye genişliğinin iki katı genişliğinde bir kumaşı keselim. Bağın uzunluğu perde rayının ne kadar yükseklikte olduğuna bağlıdır. Benimki 25 cm. Biyeleri ana perde kumaşına dikimi ve kenarların katlanmasını hesaba katmak için bu uzunluğa 2 cm daha ekleyelim.

Ne kadar biyeye ihtiyacınız olduğuna karar vermek için önce her bir biye arasındaki aralık miktarına karar verelim. Ben biyeleri her 30 cm'de bir perdenin üst kenarına yerleştirmeye karar verdim. Ve perde köşelerinin aşağı sarkmaması için her köşeye bir biye takmanızı öneririm.

Her perde parçası için 5 biyem olacak. Her biye bir çift kumaşın birbirine bağlanmasından oluştuğu için bir perde parçası için 6cm genişliğinde 27cm uzunluğunda 10 kumaş kestim. Yani tüm perde için toplam 20 parça kumaş keserek10 tane biye yaptım.

3- Biye kumaşlarını kestikten sonra enine ikiye katlayalım ve kenarlarını birbirine dikelim. Diğer uçlarda da kenarları birbirine dikelim.

4- Ana perde kumaşı hazırlamak için kumaşı enine katlayalım ve iki perde parçası elde etmek için ikiye keselim.

Perdelik kumaşın sol ve sağ kenarlarını 3 cm katlayalım ve kenarların temiz olması için dikelim. Aynı şekilde alt kenarı 3 cm katlayalım ve dikelim. Üst kenar için, 3 cm inç katlayalım ve daha güçlü hale getirmek için tekrar 3 cm üzerine katlayalım. Bütün katlanmış kenarları dikelim.

5- Şimdi biyleri perdelerin üst kenarının 1 cm altına tutturup dikelim. Ve bunu her biye arasında eşit boşluk bırakarak tekrarlalım.
